Teacher Spotlight: Kathleen Majoras

Meet Kathleen Majoras, an online math teacher who guides students through our curriculum and, as a former Village Virtual parent, has seen the power of virtual education from both sides. We sat down with Kathleen to talk about teaching, flexibility, and the students who have stayed with her over the years.

What do you love most about your role at Village Virtual?

I love that I get to teach various levels of math and help students in several different areas of the state. I get so excited when I see a topic click with a student. I enjoy teaching, and I was blessed with a lot of patience. Those two traits really help me excel as an online instructor.

What do you love most about Village Virtual as a school and community?

I love the opportunity that Village Virtual gives students. It provides quality academic material and real instruction while allowing students the freedom to do other things. My own son took Village Virtual courses. He was in a full-time soccer training academy, and regular school did not meet his athletic requirements. The freedom Village Virtual offers allowed for his in-depth training and gave him the academics he needed to meet graduation guidelines. The support team is awesome, too. They are quick to respond to teachers and students alike.

Why do you think having an online learning option is so important to student success?

Traditional school is not for everyone. We are not made from identical molds. Physical and mental differences are what make us individuals. Virtual school is not for everyone either. It demands determination, organization, and perseverance. But an online option is wonderful for students trying to get ahead, making up a course, out for an illness or injury, or maybe just not able to handle a crowded classroom. Online school works with students to get them where they need to be while still demanding responsibility and organized effort.

Are there any student stories or moments that have stayed with you over the years?

I have many. I had a parent call over the summer just to let me know that her student talked about me constantly. I have always felt that positive relationships make teaching much easier. Students perform better when there is a connection. And a couple of years ago, a group of students from Memphis schools threw me a surprise birthday party over Zoom. It was super special.

Is there anything else about Village Virtual or online learning that you think people should know?

Village Virtual offers courses that align with traditional school requirements. They are good courses, and the teachers are certified professionals. I have had some students for two years. They just continue their math with me through all of their required subjects. That says a lot. My advice is to work steadily and follow the schedule of assignments that is laid out for you. The flexibility online learning offers is wonderful for so many students and families. It is an option that really needs to be experienced.
