Teacher Spotlight: Heather Anderson
Ask Heather Anderson what people get wrong about online school, and she doesn't hesitate: they assume students are on their own.
As an online instructor at Village Virtual, she sees the other side every day. Between grading, giving feedback, supporting families, and collaborating behind the scenes, her work is all about making sure students have what they need to succeed, and that takes a lot more than a login.
What does your role look like?
I wear a lot of different hats, from supporting students and families to grading, giving feedback, and collaborating with others across the school. I really enjoy that I get to use my teaching experience in ways that go beyond a traditional classroom.
What do you love most about it?
Knowing that my work can make a difference for a student, even when we're not in the same room every day. I love finding ways to make learning more accessible, organized, and engaging, and I appreciate having the flexibility to be creative in how I support students.
What makes Village Virtual special?
Village Virtual genuinely recognizes that students learn differently and that there isn't one path to success. There's a real sense of care for students and families here, and our staff is incredibly collaborative. Everyone is willing to jump in and help one another.
Why does online learning matter?
Because having options matters. For some students, online learning offers flexibility. For others, it's an environment where they feel more comfortable and confident. It also allows students to balance school with other responsibilities and interests while still getting meaningful support from their teachers.
What moments stay with you?
It's often the small ones: a student who finally understands something they've struggled with, a student who gains confidence, or a parent who tells me their child is enjoying school again. I especially love seeing students discover that they really can succeed with the right environment and support. Those moments remind me why we do what we do.
What should people know about online school?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that students are simply learning on their own. A good online school is anything but that. It takes intentional teaching, communication, organization, and a team of people who genuinely care about student success. Online learning isn't about being different for the sake of it. It's about giving students another opportunity to find what works for them.
